How does stress affect sperm?

Stress is a condition resulting from the physical, mental, and intellectual response to a threat. It is a temporary state of mental imbalance that affects various parts of the body, including fertility.

Effects of stress on sperm production

  1. Oxidative stress: Stress leads to an increase in oxidative stress

Oxidative stress is a condition that occurs when the body lacks a balance between free radicals and antioxidants. This imbalance affects sperm cells, reducing their motility and ability to fertilize eggs.

  1. Hormonal imbalances: Stress leads to hormonal imbalances

The body releases cortisol, or stress hormone, which is produced by the adrenal glands and stimulates the body to prepare for the situation it is facing. This increase in cortisol affects the levels of various hormones in the body, including a decrease in testosterone, or the male sex hormone that plays an important role in sperm production.

  1. Decreased sperm quality: Stress affects sperm quality

Stress not only affects sperm quantity, but also sperm quality. According to a study by Rutgers School of Public Health and Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health, stress from work or unemployment can affect testosterone levels in men. Men with high levels of stress have lower sperm quality than men with low levels of stress, which can reduce the chances of fertilization.

Stress affects sperm concentration, sperm motility, morphology, and the ability to fertilize eggs.

Therefore, stress management, such as meditation, breathing exercises, exercise or yoga, and eating a healthy diet, are essential. In addition to reducing stress, it also helps improve fertility.
