How many cycles of IUI should you try until you stop and try other treatments?

To succeed IUI procedure, it requires a uterus, ovaries, eggs, and sperm that are normal or slightly abnormal, and functioning fallopian tubes.

Preparing in advance, nourishing the eggs and sperm before ovarian stimulation and sperm collection, together with preparing the uterine wall including receiving treatment from a specialized doctor can help increase the chance of getting pregnant.

Then, how many IUI cycles should you try…until you stop and try other treatments?

Proceeding with several cycles of IUI in a row can help increase the success rate. IUI is usually accomplished in 3-4 cycles. Generally, IUI can be done continuously, but it is recommended that no more than 6 times. This is because the success rate or cumulative pregnancy rate will start to stabilize and not increase or decrease after doing IUI 4-6 times.

However, if you have done IUI 2-3 times and it is still not successful, the doctor may consider re-evaluating to find the cause, such as hysterosalpingography or hysteroscopy to find the reasons why IUI was unsuccessful, any obstacles, and treatment.

However, in case of women over 35 years old, it is not recommended to try IUI more than 4 times because women over 35 years naturally have a lower chance of becoming pregnant due to the less production of qualified eggs. If proceeding IUI 3-4 times and still not pregnant yet, you should try another treatment that is more appropriate and gives better results, such as Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI).
