Vitamin D deficiency can lead to infertility.
In women, vitamin D is important for female hormones involved in the development and growth of eggs. It has also been found that women with normal vitamin D levels are more likely to be successful in infertility treatment than women with low levels.
Vitamin D is also important during pregnancy because it helps develop the fetus. If you are deficient in vitamin D during pregnancy, you are at increased risk of premature birth, gestational diabetes, and gestational hypertension. Therefore, you should get enough vitamin D during pregnancy.
In men, vitamin D is also important for the functioning of the male hormone. It was found that men with low vitamin D will affect the quality of sperm, including shape, number, and motility, which results in infertility. It was found that giving vitamin supplements to men with low sperm quality significantly improved the quality of sperm.
Blood Vitamin D Level
We can diagnose by measuring the level of 25-hydroxy-vitamin D to show the vitamin D level in the blood.
It is divided into 3 levels as follows:
- Normal level (more than 30 ng/mL)
- Vitamin D insufficiency (20 – 30 ng/mL)
- Vitamin D deficiency (less than 20 ng/mL)
The need for vitamin D supplementation varies from person to person and depends on several factors, including diet, lifestyle, current and past medications, and individual risk factors. However, taking vitamin D or other supplements should only be under the guidance of a doctor, as some supplements can interfere with fertility medications.
