What are identical twins or fraternal twins?

Naturally, women of childbearing age can become pregnant and give birth to one baby per pregnancy because only one egg is ovulated per menstrual cycle. If fertilization occurs between the sperm and the ovulated egg, one embryo will be created.

But in some conditions, twins pregnancy can occur. At the time of birth, more than one baby may be born. Also known as giving birth to twins. The twins may be born from one or more eggs. There are 2 main types of twins; identical twins and fraternal twins.

1. Monozygotic twins or identical twins are twins that result from one egg and one sperm fertilizing together. Later, the embryo cells are divided into two embryos which will always be of the same gender and have the same appearance. The division can take place in many forms as follows:

    1. Each twin has its own placenta and amniotic sac.
    2. Twins share the same placenta but different amniotic sac.
    3. Twins share the same placenta and amniotic sac.
    4. Twins share the same placenta and amniotic sac. The twins are not yet completely separated.

2. Dizygotic twins or fraternal twins are twins that develop from the fertilization of one egg and one sperm each. The embryos develop independently which can be the same gender or different gender. This type of pregnancy is most often as the result of the assisted reproductive technology when more than 1 embryo are transferred into the uterine cavity. And all of the embryos develop well at the same time, making the mother is pregnant with twins.
