What causes itching, smelly or green vaginal discharge? What about the treatment?

Normally, vaginal discharge or leukorrhea is white, cream-colored or light yellow.  Leukorrhea prior and after menstruation is thick and stingy while it is transparent and watery during the middle of menstruation.

Discharge originates from the combination of cervical mucus, shedding of vaginal epithelium scrap, uterine and vaginal secretion.

Leukorrhea makes moisture and prevents infection. Every female has vaginal discharge from childhood until old age. Hormones, age, vaginal condition and other reasons may affect vaginal discharge.

 Causes of Abnormal Leukorrhea:

  • Infection and Illness – Bacterial infection leads vaginitis. The spread of fungus creates candidiasis. Greenish / Yellowish and smelly discharge comes from bacterial infection. Itching together with heavy secretion like spoiled milk mostly caused from fungal infection.
  • Non-Infectious Factors Abnormal leukorrhea may occur from the unknown object entering vagina or cervix as well as some chemical allergies from tampon, condom, vaginal irrigation, etc. Moreover, endocervical polyp, cervical cancer or endometrial cancer may cause this problem.

Treatment of Abnormal Leukorrhea:

Treatment will be performed by following the cause or the disease of patient. Including specific medication or operation depends on the illness and the disease severity. Generally, the abnormal leukorrhea occurs from bacterial or fungal infection inside vagina. Which can be treated and completely cured by doctor’s diagnosis and medical care.

 

Therefore, woman with abnormal vaginal discharge should visit gynecologist in order to receive a proper treatment consequently.
