Do you know…light can affect embryos?

Light from a microscope inside the embryology laboratory or the operating room may cause metabolic stress to the embryo.

This light may be absorbed by a culture plate and released reactive oxygen species to harm the embryo.

The scientist needs to manage the wavelength, time and light intensity that expose to the embryo. Otherwise, the embryo will be harmful. The light that mostly exposed to the embryo comes from a microscope.

Therefore, a green filter will be needed to block the light (obstruct the light that has the wavelength below 500 nm). Nowadays, LED (Light Emitting Diode) bulbs become more popular.

The LED bulb provides a spectrum that is safe for the embryo. Moreover, the light inside a laboratory should be yellow (TL 16 fluorescent lamp, 580 nm wavelength). In case of a general fluorescent light, the scientist should select a warm white fluorescent lamp. Similar to the natural environment of eggs and embryos which is a dark condition when originated inside human body.
