E-cigarettes: A New Threat to Male Health
E-cigarettes contain substances that are the main cause affecting sexual performance, namely nicotine. This substance can be found in both e-cigarettes and traditional cigarettes. Men who regularly use e-cigarettes are 2.4 times more likely to experience erectile dysfunction than men who have never used e-cigarettes.
How does e-cigarette use affect sexual performance?
- Reduces sexual desire: Nicotine from e-cigarettes lowers male hormone levels, or testosterone. Continuous use increases nicotine levels in the blood, and the higher the nicotine, the more it affects testosterone levels, increasing the risk of erectile dysfunction.
- Affects penile erection: Nicotine stimulates free radicals, damaging the inner walls of penile blood vessels and causing the arteries to constrict, reducing blood flow to the penis.
- Impacts sperm quantity and quality, including:
• Reduced sperm concentration: The number of sperm per unit of semen decreases.
• Reduced sperm motility: Poor sperm movement affects the ability to fertilize an egg.
• Abnormal sperm morphology: Abnormal-shaped sperm may fail to fertilize an egg even if they can move.
• DNA damage in sperm: DNA damage can cause fertilization, embryo development, and implantation problems, as well as increased risk of miscarriage.
Since sperm can be regenerated in approximately 2–3 months, stopping smoking allows the body to gradually recover. Sperm quality can improve significantly about 2–3 months after quitting smoking.
