PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma), Want to have a baby, Difficult to get pregnant, Infertility – Prime Fertility Center

PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) is a centrifugation of the patient’s own blood to make the plasma separate from the rest of the blood.

Plasma contains a lot of platelets which can produce several growth factors and cytokines, such as Transforming Growth Factor (TGF), Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF), Platelet-derived Growth Factor (PDGF), and Epidermal Growth Factor (EGF). These substances play an important role for repairing and restoring cells in the body.

According to this fundamental property, the blood is centrifuged to make it more concentrated 3-5 times than usual then it is injected to an organ or tissue to stimulate the cell growth. PRP is gaining more popularity as it is a mild therapy and has low side effects. Therefore, it becomes a solution for some groups of patients, e.g., hair transplantation, aesthetic treatment, procedures to reduce skin wrinkles.

For the purpose of fertility treatment, PRP technique has been studied and used to increase the success in IVF through these procedures:

1. Intraovarian PRP Infusion: It is an infusion of PRP to both ovaries through vagina in order to stimulate ovarian function, making more egg production and better egg quality. Suitable for IVF patients before egg stimulation, women in perimenopause, women with premature ovarian failure, or the patients with a history of low egg count from previous IVF cycles.

2. Intrauterine PRP Infusion: It is an infusion of PRP to the uterine cavity through vagina in order to stimulate the growth of endometrium, making it thick enough and suitable for embryo implantation after the embryo transfer in IVF. This procedure is suitable for the patients with thin endometrium. It is performed during the process of endometrial preparation in order to increase the success rate after frozen embryo transfer (FET).

In the past few years, we have found some effective results of proceeding PRP as a treatment option along with fertility treatment. The groups of poor ovarian reserve, ovarian failure, thin endometrium, women in perimenopause who want to stimulate their eggs instead of egg donation, they could better respond to the treatment, have more egg count, leading to pregnancy and eventually live birth. Or the patients with thin endometrium could have a thicker uterine lining and get pregnant successfully after the embryo transfer.

However, PRP therapy has not been recognized with international standards. It shows uncertain results and the success rate is not high. But it becomes an option for the patients who have suffered from those serious conditions.
