Blighted ovum or Anembryonic Pregnancy is one of the abnormalities of pregnancy. 

After fertilization and embryo implantation inside uterine cavity, but the embryo never develops and becoming spontaneous atrophy. Leftovers are only amniotic sac and developed placenta. Therefore, it would be visible by the ultrasound test that we can find only amniotic sac but not embryo. Which is embryonic death or miscarriage.

Blighted ovum may cause from the imperfect embryo which came from inferior ovum (elderly mother) or weak sperm as well as medical problems/congenital disorders of mother.
